How to Transfer a Call

Choosing between a warm and a blind transfer in RingCentral, and where the full steps live.

Choosing How to Hand Off a Call

RingCentral gives you two ways to move a call to a coworker: a warm transfer, where you speak to them first and confirm they can take it, or a blind transfer, which connects the caller straight through with no heads-up. Reach for a warm transfer whenever you can; it lets your coworker step into the conversation prepared instead of picking up cold. RingCentral's current documentation sometimes labels these "consultative" and "cold" transfer instead of "warm" and "blind"; same two options, different name on the vendor side.

Who to Ask

What steps come after a warm transfer falls through: if the coworker you are trying to reach does not pick up, go back to the client, let them know that person is unavailable, and offer voicemail instead of leaving the client on hold. Need a third person on the call instead of a full handoff? Adding someone to a call already in progress is covered in Adding Someone to a Live Call. Unsure which transfer type fits, or a transfer will not go through? Ask your manager instead of guessing with a client still on the line. For what to do once you are back on the line with the caller, see How to Answer a Phone Call, Take Notes, and Save Those Notes.
