Waste Disposal, Recycling and Ordering Supplies

How pet waste gets bagged and disposed of, and how anyone on staff flags a low supply.

Purpose

Two things sit under this one SOP, and each earns its place here for its own reason. Proper waste disposal protects the health of people, animals, and the ecosystem around us. Tracking supplies is a shared job, not just a manager's job or a front-desk job.

At a Glance

  • All pet waste: scooped, bagged, and placed in the designated waste trash cans.
  • Full waste bags: tied off and taken to the nearby dumpster, where our waste disposal service picks them up on their schedule.
  • Low on a supply: tell a manager, or add it to the supply order sheet yourself. Anyone on staff can and should do this.

Steps

Waste disposal

  1. Scoop and bag pet waste as you go, both inside and outside the facility.
  2. Place bagged waste generated inside the facility in the designated waste trash cans, never loose and never in a general trash can.
  3. When a designated waste trash bag is full, tie it off.
  4. Carry the tied-off bag to the nearby dumpster. Our waste disposal service collects from there on its normal schedule.

Ordering supplies

  1. Keep an eye on supply levels as part of your normal shift, this is everyone's job, not one role's.
  2. If you notice we're running low on something, notify a manager directly, or add it to the supply order sheet yourself.

Edge Cases

  • The title of this SOP says recycling, but the only process on record is the general waste handling above. There is no separate recycling stream documented, so do not assume one exists.
  • Supplies that arrive as part of a shipment instead of through the order sheet are covered in Reporting Needed Repairs, Mail & Shipments.

Who to Ask

A manager can add anything to the supply order, and you can too, this isn't gatekept. For anything about the dumpster, pickup schedule, or waste disposal service itself, a manager is the right first call.

Who do I tell first for a low or out-of-stock supply?

Any manager, or skip that step and add it to the supply order sheet yourself. Either way works.

This page covers the standing process, not a snapshot of today's inventory.
