Training Services: Training Area Maintenance
How a trainer keeps the training area, tools, and e-collars ready before, during, and after every session.
Purpose
This SOP covers how a trainer maintains the training area itself, and their own tools and equipment, at the start of a session, during a session, and at the end of the day. It does not cover the facility's broader cleaning and disinfecting schedule, and it leaves the RED, YELLOW, and WHITE card rules that govern who may handle a given dog to Training Services: Training Procedures.
At a Glance
- Walk the training area at the start and end of every day to confirm water and supplies are on hand for each dog.
- Return all equipment and tools to their storage spot as soon as a session ends, and leave the area clean and ready for its next use.
- Keep dog training tools and equipment in good working order at all times.
- Keep barking and energy in the training area controlled and managed throughout the day.
- Hang up, store, or organize personal equipment (leashes, collars, toys, treats) any time it isn't actively in use.
- Keep e-collars charged and ready for use.
- Clear and organize the training floor and training areas completely at the end of every day.
Steps
Start of Day
- Walk through the training area before the first session and confirm water is available and any supplies each dog needs are on hand.
- Check that e-collars are charged and ready for use, and put any that need a charge on the charger right away.
- Confirm equipment and tools left from the prior day are clean and in good working order before you use them.
During the Day
- Return equipment and tools to their storage spot as soon as the session using them ends, so the area is ready for whoever uses it next.
- Hang up, store, or organize your personal equipment (leashes, collars, toys, treats) any time it isn't actively in use.
- Keep barking and energy in the training area controlled throughout the day.
End of Day
- Walk through the training area again at the end of the day and confirm water and supplies are set for the next day.
- Clear the training floor completely: no equipment, tools, leashes, or supplies left out.
- Confirm every piece of equipment used that day is stored and in good working order, and flag anything that isn't.
Edge Cases
What if a piece of equipment isn't in good working order?
Our standard is that dog training tools and equipment are always in good working order, so raise anything that isn't with a manager or senior trainer.
How do I document a piece of equipment that's out of order or an area that isn't fully reset?
Note it for a manager or senior trainer. A quick verbal or written note is enough; this SOP does not point to a separate maintenance log.
Do these steps apply to every staff role?
Not every step applies to every position. Staff are still expected to understand these routines well enough to explain how the school operates to a guest who asks.
Who to Ask
If you're unsure whether a piece of equipment is safe to keep using, or a training area isn't reset for its next session, check with a manager or senior trainer before that next session starts. Training Services: Training Procedures sets out who may handle a specific dog in that same space.
