Reception Cleanliness

The daily cleanliness standard the reception area holds to, since it's a client's first impression of the school.

Purpose

Reception is one of the most important rooms in the school. It's the first impression a client has of the facility, and it should be spotless at all times. This SOP lays out exactly what that standard looks like and what to check for.

At a Glance

  • Reception should always look, smell, and feel clean: no clutter, no dog hair, no smudges, nothing personal on display.
  • Retail items stay neat and fully stocked; paperwork and marketing material stay organized.
  • The lobby gets checked constantly through the day, not just at open and close.
  • Meeting the standard covers the whole space, floors, surfaces, windows, and the desk, not any one part of it.

Steps

The Room Overall

  1. Keep the room fresh smelling.
  2. Keep it free of hair or dust.
  3. Sweep and/or vacuum the space as needed.
  4. Keep retail items looking neat and fully stocked.

Surfaces and Windows

  1. Keep all windows clean and smudge-free.
  2. Keep all surfaces, including the retail space and seating, clean.
  3. Check for and remove any dirty paw marks on vertical surfaces.
  4. Keep seating surfaces free of dog hair.

Paperwork, the Desk, and the TV

  1. Keep all paperwork and marketing material, brochures and business cards included, neatly arranged and displayed.
  2. Keep the desk clear of visible clutter.
  3. Keep personal items out of view on or behind the desk.
  4. Keep the TV on, showing our own marketing material.

Ongoing Checks

  1. Check the lobby constantly through the day so it stays representative of a clean, well-organized facility.

Edge Cases

What is the standard for how often reception gets checked?

Constantly. It isn't a once-a-day task; check it throughout your shift so it's always ready for the next client who walks in.

A client is in the lobby and I notice something out of place. Do I wait until my next scheduled pass?

No, there's no such thing as a scheduled pass here. Checking the lobby is continuous through the day, so fix it as soon as you see it.

What counts as "clutter" on the desk?

Anything not actively in use for the task at hand, plus any personal item, whether it's on the desk or visible behind it.

Does the TV need to stay on all day?

Yes, and it should be showing our own marketing material, not something unrelated.

Who to Ask

The deeper daily routine that keeps the rest of the facility at this same standard lives in Daily Cleaning and General Cleaning Considerations. Our Physical Environment and Service Standards covers how reception fits into the wider service picture.
