Labeling Bowls

Staff rule for labeling every food bowl and reporting any feeding or medication error.

Purpose

Short version: every food bowl gets labeled, no exceptions, because an unlabeled bowl is how a feeding or medication mistake happens. Here's the how, and what to do if one slips through anyway.

Steps

  1. Confirm the bowl in front of you has a label before you fill or feed it.
  2. Read the label in full; it should match the dog, the diet type from Feeding Categories, and any medication notes.
  3. If a bowl is unlabeled or the label is unclear, stop and get it labeled correctly before feeding.
  4. If you discover an error after the fact, wrong food given, wrong amount, or a missed medication, report it to management immediately, even if the dog seems fine.

Edge Cases

  • You find an unlabeled bowl mid-feeding: stop, confirm the correct dog and instructions with a manager, and label it before continuing.
  • You realize after the fact that a dog got the wrong bowl: report it to management immediately so proactive measures can be taken to lessen the negative impact on the dog. Waiting to see if the dog seems fine is not an option.

Where do I log this after catching a labeling error?

Tell management immediately, right when you notice it, not a note left for later. Immediate reporting is what lets proactive measures be taken before a labeling mistake turns into a bigger problem for that dog.

Who to Ask

Any bowl without a label, or any label you can't make sense of, goes to a manager before it goes to a dog.
